THE W. EUGENE SMITH GRANT FOR STUDENT PHOTOGRAPHERS

In 2018 the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund announced a new grant, the W. Eugene Smith Grant for Student Photographers to encourage and support students whose photographic work renews the tradition of W. Eugene Smith’s humanistic and compassionate photography. Special consideration will be given to work that promotes social change and that embraces new technologies and image distribution, and that seeks to integrate the tradition of photography and social change with contemporary practice.

The annual $4,000 grant may be used to complete a work-in-progress. Recipient of the Grant will be selected by a jury appointed by the the Board of Trustees of the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund in Humanistic Photography.

To apply for the Grant, a fee of $1 is required. The submissions must include a scan of a current student identification card. Please enter below and select Student Photographer Grand during the registration process. The deadline for submissions is May 31, 2018.

The grant will be presented in a ceremony held in New York City on October 17, 2018.

The Jury

The Fund’s Board of Trustees will appoint a three-member jury consisting of two board members and an outside expert. The jury reviews all the photographs (submitted electronically), applications and statements of intention, and selects eight finalists on the basis of the substance and merit of their project, and the written supporting material. The finalists are then contacted by telephone for additional material. The jury reviews the materials again and proceeds to select the grant recipient and the recipient is asked to deliver a 1-3 minute video with audio describing their work which will be shown at the Smith Grant Ceremony in October.
